IHD: 9 people lost their lifes in prisons in 3 months

ANKARA - IHD Ankara Branch Prison Commission has announced the Three-Month Report on Violations of Rights in Central Anatolia Region Prisons. In the report, which drew attention to the ongoing torture practices in prisons, it was noted that nine people lost their lifes in prison within three months.
 
The Human Rights Association (IHD) Ankara Branch Prisons Commission announced the Three-Month Report on Rights Violations in Central Anatolia Region Prisons, covering the months of July, August and September, at a press conference at the IHD Ankara Branch. The report was read by IHD Central Executive Board member Nuray Çevirmen on behalf of the commission.
 
While it was stated in the report that 35 applications were registered, it was reminded that the indefinite-alternate hunger strikes in prisons demanding an end to the isolation in Imralı ended on the 290th day on 12 September. According to the Penal Institutions statistics published by the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses; In the report, which stated that there were a total of 292,074 prisoners and convicts in penal institutions, it was stated that rights violations in 18 prisons in the Central Anatolia Region, and in Van F-Type Closed Prison and Şanlıurfa No.1 T-Type Prison outside the Central Anatolia Region were also reported.
 
‘9 people lost their lifes in prisons’
 
In the report, it was stated that nine people lost their lifes in various prisons in July, August and September in line with the data obtained from the news reflected in the press. In report stated, ‘’Considering that the prisoners live together and in crowded wards, it can be said that it is almost impossible to provide a hygienic atmosphere and to practice personal protective measures in prisons. This situation reveals that the Covid-19 epidemic, which affects the whole world, can spread very quickly in prisons. It is seen that the situation is even more serious, especially when the density and mobility in the prisons are taken into account’’.
 
‘There are 41 sick women prisoners in Central Anatolia Prisons’
 
In the report, it was stated that according to the data of the IHD, there were at least 1605 sick prisoners, 604 of whom were extremely sick. It was stated that there were at least 264 sick prisoners, 41 of whom were women, in Central Anatolia Region Prisons.
